Ebola has been a major killer in a lot of countries and the recent outbreaks have been a major cause for concern for the health authorities of the world as they have been trying to regulate this illness especially in the African countries. The disease has recently been hampering countries like DR Congo. Scientists and researchers have been for a long time trying to create a vaccine for the illness which is fatal in most cases.
The first Ebola vaccine of the world had been recommended for approval by the regulators yesterday in Europe.
The move has been hailed by the WHO as a public health triumph which can save a lot of lives.
The vaccine which had been developed by US firm Merck & Co is being used already under the emergency guidelines in trying to protect against the Ebola spread in Democratic Republic of Congo.
This shot is being reviewed also under a system of fast-track by regulators in the US, with a decision expected in the next year’s first quarter.
The director-general of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said that the vaccine has already saved a lot of lives in the current outbreak of Ebola and this decision by the regulators of Europe will be helping to eventually save a lot of more lives.
The outbreak of Ebola in Congo has killed dover 2,100 people since the middle of the previous year and the vaccine which had been developed for them has been tested there and has been showing a lot of positive results.
This is the second largest outbreak of Ebola in the history after an epidemic in West Africa in 2013-16 had killed over 11,300 people.
